Abortion is one of the most contentious issues in our country. Therefore, it is not surprising that some people have reacted strongly to the possibility that the U.S. Supreme Court could soon rule to overturn Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey.
Since the leak of the draft opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, some of the charities that support pregnant mothers in need have been attacked in various parts of our country, and even the lives of Supreme Court justices have been directly threatened. In light of this, I encourage our law enforcement authorities to increase their vigilance in protecting those who are in increased danger. I thank those who have already done so, and I encourage them to continue. If anyone passing by any pregnancy help center happens to see suspicious activity, please contact local law enforcement authorities immediately.
I encourage everyone to offer ongoing, practical support to our local pregnancy resource centers, and to pray for their staff and volunteers. This is a time that calls us to become more aware of the needs of pregnant mothers and parents in our own communities by listening to them, seeking understanding, and helping them obtain the necessities of life for themselves and their children. May we lovingly support mothers and fathers in welcoming and caring for God’s gift of life.
While civil laws and court decisions may change over time, God’s law advising us to “love one another” never will, regardless of the circumstances in which we find ourselves.
