Bishop Pfeifer issues appeal to West Texans in wake of catastrophic earthquake in Haiti

Following is the text from a statement issued today, Wednesday, January 13, 2010, by the Most Rev. Michael D. Pfeifer, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Angelo, in response to the catastrophic earthquake that struck Haiti Tuesday:

“As you have surely heard, the largest earthquake to hit Haiti in more than 200 years rocked the Caribbean nation Tuesday, causing an enormous amount of death and devastation.  Early reports from Catholic Relief Services (CRS) are that there are thousands of people who have been killed. And, there are thousands now homeless and in need of basic assistance. Haiti, considered to be the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, is in dire need of any assistance possible.  The Diocese of San Angelo has already sent $3,000 to CRS earmarked for the Haiti disaster.

“This critical situation of a country not far from the United States pleads for our financial assistance and spiritual support. Therefore I am asking every parish and mission of the Diocese of San Angelo to send a donation, or take a collection, to help the countless victims of this terrible earthquake. Please share this message with all of our people. Especially ask our people to pray for our brothers and sisters who are suffering from this great disaster.

“All funds will be sent to assist our suffering brothers and sisters especially through CRS, which is on the spot in Haiti. Thank you for bringing this message to our people and let us pray for our suffering sisters and brothers. God’s peace.
